I’m gonna let you in on one of the best #FrugalFriday secrets I have. . . the Rent the Runway unlimited membership!
It’s basically Netflix, but for clothes. You pay a monthly fee, and then choose any 4 items from their enormous online selection of dresses, tops, skirts, accessories- you name it. Order the items you need for whatever you’ve got going on in your life in the next few days, and they ship it to you via 2-day air. Wear them as often as you like, keep as long as you like, and then send it back and start all over again! Honestly, it’s like living in the sorority house and digging through your friends’ closets- except the selection is bigger and the clothes always arrive clean. . . often even new with tags attached!
Here are my tips for getting the most out of your Rent the Runway membership:
- Plan ahead. I always look at my calendar for the next 10 days or so when I’m choosing a shipment. Even with the 2-day shipping, the back and forth process can take 4-5 days, so you want to plan ahead!
- If you can, get an extra bag in the rotation! I wound up with an extra bag from a shipping issue, and now I constantly have an order coming or going. You don’t have to send back all 4 items at once, so as soon as I wear an item a time or two, I send it back and swap for a new one! I can get at least a dozen “new” items a month that way, which is amazing.
- Sort by “newest”. There are lots of ways you can search for your next look, and lots of filters to choose from, but I always sort by “newest”. If you do this, and try to choose from among the first page or two of search results, I find that items arrive NWT more often than not. (That’s New With Tags for those not on Facebook Yard Sale sites. . .). And even if they’re not completely unworn, you wind up with very good odds that it will be in absolutely perfect condition.
- Look at the reviews- and post them yourself! The RTR community is pretty good at posting reviews of the items. You can sort the reviews by body type to see how an item fits people of your size/shape. Pay it forward and post photos of yourself as well! It helps everyone to know what we’re getting into. . . . And lastly:
- Branch out! This the the perfect way to try out fun styles that you might otherwise not buy for yourself. Want to see if you can pull off that glittery mini?? Go for it, girl- there’s literally no commitment!! If an item arrives and you find that you just don’t love it after all, just pop it right back in the bag and choose something else!
